Almost All of Astronomy Is Done Without Going Anywhere
Apart from a small corner of our own neighbourhood, the entire universe is studied at a distance.
Astronomy is unusual among the sciences in being almost entirely non experimental. A chemist can change the conditions and rerun the reaction. A biologist can introduce a variable and observe the response. An astronomer can do neither. The subject cannot be brought into the laboratory, cannot be prodded, and will not repeat itself on request. What arrives instead is light, and only light, gathered patiently from objects that are entirely indifferent to being watched. Everything we claim about the universe beyond our own small patch is an inference from that stream.
This sounds like a crippling limitation and is instead a remarkable demonstration of how much information light carries. Its brightness constrains distance and output. Its colour balance constrains temperature. Its spectral lines constrain composition, motion and physical conditions. Its polarisation constrains geometry and magnetic fields. Its variation over time constrains structure, rotation and the presence of companions. Astronomers have become expert at wringing every one of these threads out of a faint signal, and at cross checking each conclusion against the others until the picture stops wobbling. A single measurement is rarely trusted on its own, but a stack of independent measurements that all point the same way is very persuasive indeed.
It is worth holding onto the humility this implies. Because the evidence is remote and indirect, astronomers are unusually careful about the difference between what is measured and what is inferred, and unusually willing to revise the inference when better light arrives. Claims about distant objects are always provisional in a way that claims about rocks in a hand are not. That is not a weakness in the field. It is the field working correctly, and it is the reason its confident statements deserve to be taken seriously. When astronomers do commit firmly to a conclusion, it is usually because the light has been asked the same question in several different ways and has given the same answer each time.
